I have been working on this design for my first baby's arrival in June. I have not included a changing table, or dresser that can be used as a changing table. I have all the storage I need in the closet so it didn't warrant the purchase of a dresser, and I really needed a place to store things like books and toys so a bookcase seemed like a much smarter decision.
hello stacy....when my wife and i designed jacoble's nursery we felt we had to have a changing table in it. it is a very large piece of furniture that we have now found to be not so necessary. i think your idea of maybe some type of storage space or bookshelf is a much better use of the space if you have enough closet space in the nursery. Our nursery is upstairs and we rarely find ourself in a position where we are going up there to change him. hope this helps...
A changing table was REALLY important for about the first 9 mos of our son's life - it just wasn't practical to change him on the floor or bed - you' do it SO much (and a lot of times you're not really in the best shape.) I agree with jacobie's dad that it soon becomes diaper storage and not much use, but I think it's necessary. Maybe something from IKEA will work as both a shelving unit and a changing table. Or you can use one of their "disposable" models. I didn't like any of the c.t. offerings and I wanted something we wouldn't toss later, so, as weird as it sounds, we painted a potting bench that worked great. (We had to saw the legs down a little, too.) I used it as a desk for awhile and will now use it as display in my shop.
